Head Lice
Gonzales ISD's head lice policy is in line with Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics expectations. The information provided will explain GISD's policy and expectations.
Head Lice Information
Head lice, although not an illness or a disease, is very common among children and is spread very easily through head-to-head contact during play, sports, or nap time. Head lice are also spread when children share things like brushes, combs, hats, hair accessories, and headphones.
Plan
The student with suspected head lice will be examined by medical staff on campus. If careful observation indicates that a student has head lice, the medical staff will contact the student's parents to determine the plan of action. It is ideal that the student should be free of live lice after treatment. Notices will be provided to parents of elementary school students affected in the classroom.
GISD Policy
- The medical staff will check any student reported to possibly have head lice. The parent will be notified confidentially if active head lice or nits (eggs) are found . The teacher will be informed immediately, and the student will not use any shared headphones, helmets, hats or clothing. The medical staff will provide information to the parents about proper treatment.
- If no head lice or nits are found, but the parent or the student reports he or she has recently been treated for lice, the child will be checked again in one week.
- GISD's policy is not to cause exclusion from school or functions. Please contact medical staff with questions or concerns regarding treatment.
